What Asian Civilisations Museum is
Asian Civilisations Museum occupies the former Empress Place Building, which the museum’s own site describes as first completed in 1867, before seeing several extensions added during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The National Heritage Board’s Roots portal records that the building was designed by Colonial Engineer Major John F. A. McNair, that construction ran from June 1864 to December 1867, and that convict labour was used, with Neoclassical detailing including a rusticated ground floor, arcaded verandahs and a Roman Doric facade to the principal storey. Roots also notes that the building sits at the mouth of the Singapore River.
For more than a century the building housed colonial and, later, Singapore government departments, including the Secretariat, Treasury and, until the 1980s, the Immigration Department, and it reopened as a museum in 1989. The Asian Civilisations Museum itself began elsewhere, opening in the former Tao Nan School Building on Armenian Street in 1997, before moving into the restored Empress Place Building in 2003. A later renewal added the Kwek Hong Png Wing, which the museum describes as a contemporary cube that appears to float on the Empress Place side of the museum, set beside the original facade. The building is listed by the National Heritage Board among Singapore’s national monuments.
Spaces ACM offers for weddings and private events
ACM’s own venue hire page describes classic and contemporary venues for private and other events, and its level-by-level listing names the River Room and River Terrace on level 2 for weddings, among other events, with the Riverfront Forecourt on level 1 listed for cocktail receptions and other events. This means a wedding at ACM is not limited to portraits outside the building: the museum itself lists space for the event.

Portraits along the riverside and facade
Outside any hired space, ACM’s colonnaded facade and the riverside beside it can make a setting for portraits, pairing the formal lines of the facade with the open look of the river. Treating the architecture as a backdrop around you, rather than the main subject of every frame, keeps a varied set of images rather than one repeated look.
ACM’s published photography rule allows photography without flash and videography inside the galleries, and states that no images of the museum or its collection may be reproduced for commercial use without permission from ACM, with its communications team named as the contact for that permission. The gallery photography permission does not establish permission for a private portrait session on the forecourt or riverside walkway; confirm session requirements with ACM, and ask its communications team about commercial use of the resulting images. How solemnisation can work at ACM
Solemnisation does not have to happen at the Registry of Marriages itself. ROM allows offsite civil solemnisations at a chosen venue, including on weekends and public holidays, subject to its application and marriage-licence requirements; a hired ACM space could therefore be used with the museum’s agreement and a licensed solemniser you book yourself. ROM’s registry currently operates from 8 Raffles Avenue, The Esplanade Mall, a temporary site it moved to in April 2025 while its original Canning Rise building is redeveloped, so the registry itself is not based at ACM or any other venue you choose.
Bookings with a licensed solemniser can be made 3 to 6 months before the date (ROM notes solemnisers may not be able to commit earlier), and they must accept the booking through ROM’s portal before your appointment. You will also need two witnesses above 21, of any nationality. Submit your marriage application to ROM no earlier than six months and at least 21 days before the solemnisation, and complete ROM’s declaration and marriage-licence requirements. Light and timing across the day
ACM opens daily from 10am to 7pm, and to 9pm on Fridays, with gallery admission ending 30 minutes before closing; confirm outdoor access and hired-space timings separately with ACM. If quieter surroundings matter to you, discuss possible timings with your photographer and check access with ACM before choosing an early session.
Discuss how the light on the facade and river may vary with the season, weather and your planned session time before choosing a portrait slot. Rain and wet-weather options
A riverside and facade session is, by nature, an outdoor one, so it is worth asking the venue hire team whether River Room could serve as an indoor fallback if you have booked River Terrace or the forecourt for your event, rather than assuming it is available at short notice. For a portrait-only session not tied to a booking, ask ACM whether any sheltered option is possible, and agree a backup plan with your photographer in advance.
