What Carlton Hotel Singapore is
Carlton Hotel Singapore’s own contact page, fetched 28 September 2026, gives its address as 76 Bras Basah Road, Singapore 189558, and places the hotel at the corner of Bras Basah Road. The hotel should not be confused with Carlton City Hotel, a separate hotel at 1 Gopeng Street in Tanjong Pagar whose own site, carltoncity.sg, fetched the same day, also lists events and celebrations; this guide covers Carlton Hotel Singapore only.
According to NLB’s Singapore Infopedia, a Caledonian Hotel opened in 1904 at 77 Bras Basah Road, with Thomas Sargeant as proprietor and Thomas Martin Connolly as manager. Infopedia states the hotel probably stopped operating in the 1910s, after which the building was occupied in turn by several other hotels — St George Hotel, Oriental Hotel, Metropole Hotel and Rex Hotel — before the Mountbatten Club, a club for British servicemen, took over the premises in 1948. Infopedia states that Carlton Hotel now stands at the former site of the building.
According to Roots.gov.sg, the National Heritage Board’s heritage portal, a hotel of a similar name, the Caledonia Hotel, was established in 1904 along Bras Basah Road and also probably stopped operating in the 1910s; it was renamed the Oriental Hotel after its owner decided to pursue other business activities, and Roots.gov.sg confirms Carlton Hotel now occupies that former site. Roots.gov.sg does not list the fuller sequence of later hotels that Infopedia gives. Neither source gives a construction or opening date for the present Carlton Hotel building itself, so this guide does not state one.
Spaces the hotel lists for weddings
The hotel’s wedding-packages page, fetched 28 September 2026, lists two 2026 package documents by venue: an Empress Ballroom Wedding Package and an Esplanade Wedding Package, each applicable, per its own terms, to weddings held from 1 January to 31 December 2026. The hotel’s meetings and events page describes the Empress Ballrooms as taking up the whole of Level 2, with Empress Ballrooms 4 and 5 described as pillar-less with high ceilings and Empress Ballrooms 1 to 3 offering a smaller-scale setting, the two together covering 826 sqm, according to the page. The Esplanade Room is described on the same page as suited to gatherings ranging from theatre-style seminars to smaller wedding banquets, located on Level 4 of the Main Tower, with an adjoining open-air Courtyard.
The hotel states capacity as a minimum and maximum number of tables of 10 persons rather than as a guest total; its wedding FAQ page states a table seats a maximum of 11 adults, or 10 adults plus one baby chair. Increasing the food portion for an 11th guest is optional. The Empress Ballroom Wedding Package 2026 document, fetched 28 September 2026 and applicable to weddings held from 1 January to 31 December 2026, gives Empress Ballroom 1–3 (Level 2) a minimum of 18 tables and a maximum of 23 tables, and Empress Ballroom 4–5 (Level 2) a minimum of 25 tables and a maximum of 28 tables. The hotel’s wedding FAQ page, fetched the same day, states the same minimums but gives Empress Ballroom 1–3 a maximum of 24 tables instead of 23; the two pages disagree on this one figure, so confirm the current maximum with the hotel before planning around it. The Esplanade Wedding Package 2026 document, also applicable to weddings held from 1 January to 31 December 2026, and the FAQ page agree that Esplanade Room 1 & 2 (Level 4) hold a minimum of 10 tables and a maximum of 12 tables.
The hotel’s meetings and events page also lists an Istana Room and a Connaught Room among its 13 event spaces. It describes the Istana Room, on Level 2 of the Premier Wing, as suited to smaller meetings, private gatherings and sit-down banquets, with floor-to-ceiling windows; the Connaught Room, on Level 2 of the Main Tower, is described as a setting for meetings and seminars. Neither room appears among the hotel’s named wedding-package documents, so ask the hotel whether either is offered for a wedding.
Solemnisation at Carlton Hotel Singapore
For a civil marriage, the hotel’s wedding FAQ page, fetched 28 September 2026, states that a complimentary function room is provided for “ROM / Tea Ceremony usage,” available from 11.00am to 12.00pm for a wedding lunch and from 5.30pm to 6.30pm for a wedding dinner. For the solemnisation specifically, the same page states a maximum capacity of 30 persons in the function room, excluding the solemniser; couples inviting more guests may instead hold the ceremony on the ballroom stage, with guests seated in rounds in the main ballroom. For a tea ceremony held in the same complimentary room, the hotel states it provides a tea set and Chinese tea, up to 30 disposable tea cups, and one staff member to assist with pouring and serving; the FAQ page does not state a separate guest-capacity limit for the tea ceremony itself.
This would be an offsite ceremony under the Registry of Marriages’ own rules, requiring a licensed solemniser and completion of the application, declaration and marriage-licence steps on marriage.gov.sg. Coordinate the proposed venue, date and time with the hotel and your licensed solemniser before finalising arrangements. Submit the marriage application online no earlier than six months and at least 21 days before the solemnisation, counted from when the application is submitted and paid, and arrange two witnesses who are above 21.
ROM’s own sites are separate from a hotel wedding: as at September 2026, the Registry of Marriages operates from The Esplanade Mall while its Canning Rise building is redeveloped, and a second ROM venue, the Ficus Room at Gardens by the Bay, holds a maximum of 40 people including the couple and witnesses. Neither is the same as a solemnisation held at Carlton Hotel Singapore; for an offsite solemnisation here, confirm the function-room arrangements above directly with the hotel.
What the hotel states about photography and vendors
The hotel’s wedding FAQ page, answering a question about florists and stylists, states that its wedding package includes a choice of three décor themes, and that couples are welcome to engage their own external vendors for additional customisation. The pages reviewed for this guide do not separately confirm whether this extends to bringing your own photographer or videographer, so ask the events team directly.
On tables for the day, the same FAQ page states that the hotel provides two tables with four chairs for the reception, plus one table with an ivory tablecloth for the photo display; beyond the package’s standard décor theme, it states that further decorations are not included and must be arranged by the couple. For catering, the hotel’s wedding packages draw on Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant. Ask the events team directly whether outside photographers and videographers are permitted for your booked space, whether a site visit is possible beforehand, and how the photo display table may be styled.
Light and a wet-weather plan
The hotel’s meetings and events page describes the Esplanade Room’s reception area as “naturally lit,” and lists an adjoining open-air Courtyard. The pages reviewed for this guide do not state whether the Courtyard is used for weddings or whether it is sheltered. The Empress Ballroom is not described on the pages reviewed as having natural light or an outdoor extension.
Ask whether the Courtyard can be used as part of your booking; if so, ask whether an indoor alternative is available and what conditions apply. Any drone flying must comply with CAAS Operator Permit and Activity Permit requirements.
What to ask before you book
Ask the events team which figure currently applies for the Empress Ballroom 1–3 maximum – the package document’s 23 tables or the FAQ page’s 24 – along with which spaces suit your guest count, whether the Istana Room or Connaught Room can be booked for a wedding, whether your own photographer and videographer are permitted, and whether the Courtyard can be used as part of your booking and on what conditions.
