Sentosa and Sentosa Cove
According to the National Heritage Board’s Roots portal, Sentosa was long known as Pulau Blakang Mati, and forts and a battery were installed there in the 1870s and 1880s to guard the harbour’s entrances. A competition in 1969 to rename the island led to the name Sentosa, and the Sentosa Development Corporation followed in 1972.
The National Library Board’s Infopedia records that Sentosa Cove sits partly on reclaimed land and partly on the former isle of Buran Darat, with reclamation from November 1991 to September 1993. In 1992 the Sentosa Development Corporation engaged French architect Bernard Spoerry, known for the seaside town of Port Grimaud, to help draw up a master plan; the marina was in operation by 1999, and land sales for private development began in 2003.
Wedding spaces the hotel lists
The hotel’s weddings page describes the Great Room as a 720-square-metre pillarless room with an outdoor terrace, natural light and a giant LED screen of 5 by 14 metres. Its capacity chart lists the Great Room for 480 at a banquet or 540 at a reception, and Great Room 1 and Great Room 2 for 200 at a banquet or 270 at a reception each. The chart lists each of the four Studios for 50 at a banquet or 60 at a reception, and the Studios combined for 180 at a banquet or 240 at a reception; the weddings page describes the Studios as a place to say your vows, with high ceilings, natural daylight and tropical views.
For an outdoor ceremony, the weddings page names the W Lawn for a tropical solemnisation with views of the Cove marina; the capacity chart lists it for 200 at a banquet or reception. The hotel’s events page also mentions a Garden Terrace for outdoor moments before or after an event, without a capacity in the chart. The weddings page describes an optional catamaran experience, the Afterglow Voyage, departing from Sentosa Cove Marina; ask the events team for current details. A civil solemnisation here
For a civil marriage, a solemnisation here would be an offsite ceremony requiring the venue’s agreement, a licensed solemniser and completion of ROM’s application, declaration and marriage-licence requirements; offsite ceremonies may take place on weekends and public holidays. Coordinate the proposed venue, date and time with the hotel and your licensed solemniser before finalising arrangements. Submit the marriage application no earlier than six months and at least 21 days before the solemnisation, and arrange two witnesses above 21.
If you would rather solemnise at one of ROM’s own sites, the room at The Esplanade Mall (as at September 2026) holds up to 20 people and the Ficus Room at Gardens by the Bay up to 40, including the couple and witnesses. Photography, filming and drones on Sentosa
Sentosa Development Corporation’s FAQ states that filming and photo shoots for personal use are allowed on the island without a permit, while a commercial shoot needs a permit, with requests made at least 10 working days in advance. Ask Sentosa whether your session counts as personal or commercial, especially for any shots planned outside the hotel’s own grounds, such as at the marina.
The same FAQ states that recreational drone flying is strictly prohibited on Sentosa, that commercial drone operations require Sentosa’s prior approval, and that all unmanned aircraft operations must comply with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore’s requirements for Operator and/or Activity Permits. Vendors, light and rain
The weddings page says Marriott Certified Wedding Planners can help with details such as finding florists, photographers, a band and other entertainment. The pages reviewed do not say whether outside photographers and videographers may work anywhere on the property, so ask the events team, including when vendors can reach the rooms and lawn for setup.
For portraits on the W Lawn or the Great Room’s terrace, ask whether your photographer can see the spaces at the time of day you have booked. What to ask the events team
- Which spaces are available on your date, and which capacity figure applies to your layout.
- Whether an indoor alternative is available and what conditions apply if rain affects a W Lawn solemnisation.
- Whether outside photographers and videographers are welcome, and when vendors can reach the spaces.
- Where the bridal car and vendor vehicles should arrive and park.
- Whether any part of your shoot, such as at the marina, would need Sentosa’s permission.
