In short
HortPark is an NParks park near the Southern Ridges that opened to the public on 10 May 2008. Its venues-booking page lists lawns, a hall, an open-air garden and smaller rooms for events and celebrations, with stated capacities and booking rules, and a civil solemnisation here follows ROM’s rules for an offsite ceremony.
- The venues page lists the Event Lawn for up to 500 guests at round tables or 900 standing, the HortLawn for 600, the MPH for 200 seated, and the open-air Scented Garden for 50.
- Bookings must be made two months before the event date and generally run in four-hour blocks or a full day from 8am to 10pm; the Scented Garden is available for full-day bookings only.
- HortPark’s park page asks for filming applications at least two weeks ahead and specifies the same lead time for drone applications at the HortLawn, Hort Centre and Silver Garden.
- A civil solemnisation here is an offsite ceremony, with ROM’s usual application, declaration and marriage-licence requirements.
- The pages reviewed do not describe wedding packages, so ask the venue manager what a wedding booking includes.
What HortPark is
According to the National Heritage Board’s Roots portal, HortPark first opened its gates on 10 May 2008 after an ideation process that began in the early 2000s, and NParks envisioned it as “a one-stop gardening resource hub”. NParks’ park page gives its area as 10.7 hectares, with more than 10 themed gardens, and places it within the Southern Ridges, part of the Labrador Nature Park Network.
The pages reviewed for this guide do not describe HortPark as a dedicated wedding venue; its venues page lists spaces for events and celebrations, so ask the venue manager how a wedding booking is handled.
The spaces HortPark lists
HortPark’s venues-booking page lists these spaces:
- Event Lawn: surrounded by trees, for up to 500 guests at round tables or 900 standing, at about 2,054 square metres; the page states that any set-up on the lawn requires planking and a marquee for shelter.
- HortLawn: an open-air space set against the Silver Garden, for up to 600 people, at about 920 square metres.
- MPH, with a stage: up to 200 seated or 250 standing, at about 249 square metres, with full-length glass sliding doors looking onto the Silver Garden.
- Scented Garden: an open-air space with fragrant plants, climbing vines and a lattice pagoda, which the page calls a setting for cosy celebrations, for up to 50 people at about 112 square metres; only full-day bookings are available.
- Fruit, Leaf, Flower and Seed Rooms: for up to 50, 25, 25 and 16 people.
A fee applies to each space. The page states that event-space bookings at HortPark are managed by Parkhouse Collection by 1-Host, which can also arrange a site recce.
Booking rules to plan around
The venues page generally sets bookings in standard four-hour blocks, with extra hours as add-ons, or a full day from 8am to 10pm; the Scented Garden is available for full-day bookings only. All bookings must be made two months before the event date. It treats Friday to Sunday as peak and Tuesday to Thursday as off-peak, and says it is your responsibility to choose a venue that suits your event’s capacity, safety and space requirements, suggesting a site recce. A civil solemnisation here
For a civil marriage, a solemnisation here would be an offsite ceremony requiring the venue’s agreement, a licensed solemniser and completion of ROM’s application, declaration and marriage-licence requirements; offsite ceremonies may take place on weekends and public holidays. Coordinate the proposed venue, date and time with the venue and your licensed solemniser before finalising arrangements. Submit the marriage application no earlier than six months and at least 21 days before the solemnisation, and arrange two witnesses above 21.

Photography, filming and drones
HortPark’s park page asks for on-location filming applications at least two weeks before the filming date and says later applications will not be considered. It also says that flying a drone at the HortLawn, Hort Centre or Silver Garden needs an application at least two weeks before the flying date. NParks’ general permit page requires permits for all filming and commercial photography in its parks, excludes HortPark from its small-scale permit route and asks for applications at least one month ahead; confirm the applicable deadline with NParks because HortPark’s own page states at least two weeks for filming. The pages reviewed do not say how a session with a hired wedding photographer is treated, so ask NParks or the venue manager before your date. Rain, shelter and timing
The Event Lawn’s set-up rule already calls for a marquee for shelter. For other outdoor spaces, ask whether an indoor alternative is available and what conditions apply — the MPH is one indoor space to ask about — then agree the plan with your photographer; our wet-weather planning guide covers what to agree in advance. The park page gives the park’s hours as 6am to 11pm, with shorter hours for visitor services, so check both before you plan portraits.

What to ask before you book
- Which space suits your guest numbers and setup, and whether a site recce can be arranged.
- What a wedding booking includes, and whether catering and a banquet setup are allowed in your chosen space.
- How NParks treats a session with a hired wedding photographer, and whether a filming or drone application is needed.
- Ask whether an indoor alternative is available and what conditions apply if it rains.
- Where guests, the bridal car and your vendors should arrive and park.
